Course Objectives

The objective of this class is to improve your chances of being a successful college student. You will do this by learning and practicing specific skills that are required of college students (time management, test-taking strategies, note-taking skills, etc.), and by gaining self-awareness (your personal learning styles, values, goals, strengths and weaknesses, etc.). This combination of skills and self-awareness can help you make the most of your college experience and the rest of your life. It is my job to assist you in learning academic and life skills, but it is your job to decide which of these skills work best for you and apply them. As a college student and an adult, you are responsible for getting the most out of your education and your own life. Ultimately, the student who takes the initiative to examine him/herself thoroughly will get the most out of this class.

“Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.” – Chinese Proverb

Class Participation and Attendance

Class attendance and participation are vital components of this course. You are responsible for attending each class session on time and prepared to participate in class activities and discussions. I will be taking roll at the start of each class. Students arriving to class late will lose ½ of the possible attendance/participation points for that class. If you come late it is your responsibility to let me know you attended the class. Please contact me ahead of time if you know you will miss a class period. Each student is allowed 1 excused absence per semester, provided he/she notifies me prior to the missed class. If absent, you are responsible for obtaining any missed information. I expect that each student has completed the assigned reading for each class and is prepared to discuss it. If you are unprepared, it is your responsibility to let me know before class starts.

Your participation in this course is as important as mine. You can earn full points by participating in class discussions, activities and small groups. This is a subjective grade. I realize that people have different levels of comfort with public speaking; however, I expect everyone to stretch themselves and attempt to share their thoughts, comments and questions in a respectful and appropriate manner. Those of you who tend to dominate class discussions may have to stretch yourselves in the other direction.

Assignments

All assignments must be typed (12 point font), double-spaced and stapled unless otherwise noted. Assignments are due at the beginning of the class session. Assignments turned in after the class session has ended will be penalized 10% (for example an assignment worth 100 points would lose 10 points). An additional 10% will be subtracted for each subsequent day the assignment is turned in late (an assignment worth 100 points due on Monday and turned in the following Friday would be penalized 50 points). Also, please spell-check and proofread your work before handing it in. Assignments will be docked 1 point for each spelling/grammar error. If you know ahead of time that you will have difficulty meeting an assignment deadline, notify me as soon as possible. I may be willing to make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Attendance & Class Participation

420 points (approximately 10 points per class) Class attendance and participation are vital components of this course. Email – 20 points

Set up a university e-mail account and send me a brief message. This message can be something unique or interesting about yourself or simply how you have adjusted to life at the U so far. Please title this e-mail “E-Mail Assignment”

Response Papers – 25 points each

These assignments are 1 page papers addressing assigned readings or activities. I want you to cover the 3 R’s: Review the material briefly. This should be no more than one paragraph. Reflect on what you read. How does it pertain to you as a student? As a person? React to the material (What do you think? Why or why not?). This is an opportunity to prove you have done the reading. It also helps me to know if you understand what you have read. I will drop the lowest 2 Response Paper grades.

Journal Assignments – 25 points each

These will be done in class. Each journal writing assignment will relate to a topic discussed in the textbook or in class. I will give you questions to help guide your journal entries, but you are also encouraged to add any additional resources you may find appropriate. I am looking for your personal reactions not an echo of my opinions or the opinions of the textbook author.

Assignment Calendar – 25 points

Make a master assignment list or calendar for all your classes (not just this one!) this semester. Use the syllabi from your classes and show all assignments, quizzes, exams, papers, etc. that are due this semester. Make sure the due dates are clearly marked with space to cross out completed assignments and include estimations of how long you will need to complete each assignment. This Assignment Calendar should be large and easy to read (something you could hang on your wall). Be creative.

Library Assignments – 3 75 points (25 points each)

The class will take 3 field trips to the Marriott Library. We will meet in Marriott Library Room 1705A & 1735. These presentations will involve learning about the U’s UNIS referencing system, databases and the Internet. You will be given an assignment due the next class session on each of these library meetings. Attendance is mandatory. Action Portfolio 250 points You will get out of this class only as much as you are willing to put into it. I want to make sure you put something into it that is meaningful to you.

For this Action Portfolio, you must think of some area in your life (preferably academic, but not necessarily) which you feel could use improvement. It can be something like getting more sleep, eating healthy foods, improving a specific academic skill, etc. Once you have decided on the area you would like to work on, you will develop a plan of action and then implement that plan. This assignment will have 5 components. You will include a behavioral component – How will you reinforce or reward yourself for making progress toward your goal? What happens if you backslide? You will also maintain a written record of your progress (to be checked in class periodically) and discuss the effectiveness of your plan. Further details of this assignment will be discussed in class. The point breakdown is as follows:

  1. Contract 25 points
  2. Antecedent Analysis 50 points
  3. Reinforcement/Consequence Discussion 50 points
  4. Written Record (Log/Journal) 25 points
  5. Final Discussion Paper 100 points

Diversity Interview – 100 points

In this class we focus quite a bit on self-awareness, but awareness of others is also a critical component of your education. Diversity is to be embraced. I want you to expand your knowledge of others and learn from their experiences. This assignment requires you to seek out a person who is significantly different from you and interview him/her. The person you choose must be different from you in at least 2 of the following categories: race, culture, gender, religion, country of origin, age/generation, sexual orientation and physical disability. I will provide you with some general interview questions but I expect you to be creative as well. You will turn in a 2-3 page paper with your interviewee’s responses as well as your own thoughts/reflections on the experience.

Profession of Interest Project – 200 points

This assignment will give you the opportunity to do a number of important things. For this project you will go to the Career Services Library and take a career interest inventory. You will then choose a profession that interests you based on the results, research it, and design a personal academic/professional plan to achieve your goals. This will give you the opportunity to research a career and academic area of interest whether you have declared a major or not. You will also interview an individual who is already working in the field you choose. You will then turn in a 2-3 page summary of your findings. Details for this project will be discussed in class

Social Issues Presentation – 100 points

For this project you will form groups and research some important issue that is facing our community/nation/world. As a group, you will collect facts and opinions from all sides of this issue, present your findings in front of the class and lead a brief discussion. This is a great opportunity to research an issue that is meaningful to you, learn how to sort facts from opinions, and consider opposing points of view. Details for this assignment will be discussed in class. In addition, you must compose a one page handout to be given to your classmates and an annotated bibliography that details the information you gathered.

Extra Credit – 5 to 10 points

I will notify students of possible extra credit assignments/activities periodically throughout the semester. Students are also encouraged to inquire about possible extra credit assignments as needed.
