Thank you for choosing to visit Australia’s Industry World. This teaching unit is supplied to assist you to introduce the topic, maximise learning during the excursion and guide the follow up.
The unit provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of Australia’s Global Interconnectedness through the study of a visit to Port Kembla Harbour. Port Kembla: Gateway to the World targets students in Year 5 and 6 working towards Stage 3 outcomes of the Human Society and Its Environment K-6 Syllabus. It incorporates a range of activities to support the teaching of HSIE knowledge, skills, values and attitudes. These activities can be implemented with a whole class, small groups or individual students. Indicators, used in this unit, can be found in the syllabus. Teachers are encouraged to create further indicators that illustrate the outcomes and to look for other indicators in the work of their students. The unit consists of three sections organised to incorporate an excursion to Australia’s Industry World as Teaching / learning activities are sequential and are designed to give students an introduction and excursion follow up.
Role of the Teacher during the excursion
The role of the teacher during the excursion is to work cooperatively with the Tour Guide to facilitate the key learning outcomes outlined in the unit. This recognises that the teacher has the skill to highlight the rigour found in these outcomes from the content presented during the excursion. The focus on the worksheets and the extent of their use on the excursion is the teacher’s responsibility, in line with your objectives. Your Tour Guide is an experienced Industry operator with good knowledge of the region and its role as a gateway to the world.
